MR. RECORDS puts you in the shoes of George, an old dreamer who finally opens the record shop he has talked about for decades. By day, you sell vinyl to his customers; by night, every record becomes a rhythm level. Its free Steam demo has just passed 25,000 players, according to the studio, and it now includes a level editor that lets you import your own music. The game comes from Glee-Cheese Studio, a French team already known for A Musical Story and Headbangers: Rhythm Royale. The full release is due in the first quarter of 2027.
At a glance
MR. RECORDS alternates between running a record shop by day and playing rhythm levels by night, with George and his dog Buzz.
The free demo passed 25,000 players on 24 October, according to Glee-Cheese Studio, and has included a level editor since 15 October.
Due on PC in the first quarter of 2027, MR. RECORDS is also coming to PS5, Xbox Series and Switch 2, with French and English voices.
The MR. RECORDS demo goes from 20,000 to 25,000 players in two days
The demo has been free on Steam since 22 September, according to Gematsu, and it’s part of Steam Next Fest October 2026, the showcase for indie demos, which runs until 26 October. On 22 October, the studio announced its 20,000th “customer” in the demo, and two days later it had reached 25,000, according to the announcement posted on the MR. RECORDS Steam page. That said, the figure comes from the studio itself, which talks about customers because the player runs the shop, and Steam offers no way to check it.
Since 15 October, the MR. RECORDS demo has also included a level editor, revealed during the Galaxies Gaming Showcase. You’ll find it on the main menu, right next to the story mode. You import your own track, the game generates a level from it, and then you place the obstacles and enemies yourself. The studio has released two video tutorials, and the second, out on 23 October, shows how to add puddles, holes and even fireworks. For now, creations are shared on the game’s official Discord.

George has to learn every record before he can sell it
MR. RECORDS is built on two halves that feed into each other. In the shop, customers walk in with a specific request, sometimes a little riddle, and you have to find them the right album. George can only sell a record once he has listened to it and understood it, which means clearing the level tied to that record, as Nick Petrasiti explains in his preview of the game for TheSixthAxis. Money from sales then pays for new vinyl, which opens up new levels.
At night, each record turns into a course where George runs, jumps, slides and dodges in time with the music, through settings drawn from his memories. The Steam page promises more than 40 handcrafted levels, and TheSixthAxis mentions 49 tracks planned for the full game. All the music is composed by the team itself, from funk and progressive rock to hip-hop, electro and 80s pop. Petrasiti calls the link between the two halves “genuinely clever”, and warns that the higher difficulty he tried was “hard. Very hard, in fact” once the more demanding sequences kicked in.
Between levels, George unwinds in his bedroom above the shop, where he looks back over his memories and tracks his progress. The songs in MR. RECORDS also tell his life story: The Sausage Blues is about his father Roger, a butcher worried about running out of sausages on a busy day. That song and Power of Imagination, the opening track, came out on streaming platforms on 19 October, through the label Black Razor Records.
A French studio with a feel for music games
Wired Productions, the publisher of MR. RECORDS, describes Glee-Cheese Studio as an independent team from France. The studio released A Musical Story in 2022, followed by Headbangers: Rhythm Royale, a Team17-published rhythm game in which thirty pigeons battle it out in musical mini-games. “Music has a unique power. One song can instantly transport you back to a specific moment, a person you loved, or a memory you thought was lost forever,” says Charles Bardin, co-founder of Glee-Cheese, in the announcement press release quoted by Steve Wright for Stevivor. According to Bardin, MR. RECORDS was born from that feeling, and George’s journey is about finding the courage to finally chase the dreams you’ve spent years putting aside.
MR. RECORDS is due on PC in the first quarter of 2027, according to its Steam page, which lists voice acting in French and English. Wired Productions has also announced it for PS5, Xbox Series and Switch 2, as well as the Epic Games Store and GOG. Glee-Cheese Studio will have the demo playable at the Gamescom Asia x Thailand Game Show in Bangkok, from 29 October to 1 November, on stand F15. For everyone else, the Steam demo is the easiest way to make your mind up before Next Fest ends.
To see what’s landing over the next few weeks, the Hitbox release calendar lists every date with its official source.
