Kena: Scars of Kosmora slips to 2027, says Ember Lab

Kena: Scars of Kosmora won’t be out in 2026 after all. Ember Lab announced on 1 October that the sequel to Kena: Bridge of Spirits has slipped into 2027, on PS5 and PC. The studio says it needs more time to polish a game that is considerably bigger than the first. To soften the news, it shared details on the story, the island of Kosmora and Kena’s new companion. No specific date was given, which leaves the whole of 2027 open.

At a glance

Kena: Scars of Kosmora has moved from 2026 to 2027, on PS5 and PC.

Ember Lab wants to top the quality of Bridge of Spirits on a much larger game.

The studio revealed an island of four cultures, puzzle temples and a crystal mount.

Why Kena: Scars of Kosmora has slipped to 2027

The announcement comes from Thomas Varga, the game’s writer, and Josh Grier, Ember Lab’s chief operating officer, in a post on the PlayStation Blog. Since February’s reveal trailer, the team says it has been heads down getting the game over the line. Even so, it admits it needs “just a bit more time”.

Behind that sits a clear ambition. Ember Lab wants to deliver a game that surpasses the quality of 2021’s Bridge of Spirits, on a much bigger scale. Pushing the release into 2027 should give it room to polish that expanded experience, and the studio thanks players for their patience along the way.

Platforms are unchanged: PS5 in both physical and digital form, and PC as a digital release. When it was revealed at February’s State of Play, Kena: Scars of Kosmora was still aiming for 2026, as outlets such as Stevivor and Engadget reported at the time. This is the project’s first official delay.

A bigger adventure on the island of Kosmora

Ember Lab is sticking with the first game’s formula. Kena: Scars of Kosmora remains a character-focused linear adventure, though broader and deeper in scope than Bridge of Spirits. The world still has plenty to offer players who wander off the beaten path.

As for the story, Kena has spent years training as a Spirit Guide, part warrior and part healer. Her job is to bring peace to the dead who can’t move on, whose pain seeps into the world as Corruption. Lately, though, she has been running into her limits. She has helped the dead without really exploring what Spirit Guiding means for the living, and she has eased other people’s pain while leaving her own aside. Her childhood friend Orfio believes the island of Kosmora holds the answers they’ve both been looking for.

The island is built around four elements. Four cultures once thrived there, each guided by an element, until a mysterious cataclysm wiped one of them out. Kosmora’s ancient Spirit Guides left behind Alchemystic Temples, which serve as the game’s dungeons. The studio promises tough challenges and rewards that change how Kena plays.

The crystal companion of Kena: Scars of Kosmora

Kosmora holds more than ruins. Several cultures still live on the island, each with its own history, values and struggles. Kena will have to deal with these characters and adapt as situations shift during her mission.

To get around this larger world, Kena gains a new ally: an ancient spirit in the shape of a crystalline dog. It works as a mount, helps in combat both on its back and on foot, and plays a part in solving puzzles. Ember Lab adds that it is tied directly to the island’s origins, which hints at a significant role in the story.

Honestly, a delay announced with this much detail about the content is more reassuring than worrying. The studio is clear about what it wants to do with the extra time: polish a game that is longer, more open and richer in puzzles than the first. For anyone hoping to play the sequel this year, the disappointment is real. What remains to be seen is when in 2027 Kena: Scars of Kosmora will finally arrive, and whether Ember Lab can deliver a bigger game without losing the charm of the original.
